I am delighted to present the fresh, brand new and awesome looking cover for Jordan Loyal Short’s ‘The Skald’s Black Verse’
What is a Skald, you ask?
It’s an ancient Scandinavian word for a composer and reciter of poems honouring heroes and their deeds. As you can guess from the title though, this is no light hearted affair; this is epic Grimdark fantasy!
“Just tell us about the book!”
Ok, ok. Here’s the synopsis:
When a soldier’s murder sparks rebellion in the tiny village of Skolja, Brohr’s past marks him as the prime suspect. Haunted by his brother’s ghost, and drawn into a web of dark pacts and tangled loyalties, Brohr must choose between the path of vengeance set before him, and a chance to forge his own fate.
From the shadows, an all but extinct race of alien demigods have begun the end game of their millennia-spanning war, and one has chosen Brohr for his closing gambit.
But Brohr’s grandfather harbors a dark secret that will change everything.
Above it all, a dread portent looms in the sky, spelling the death of Brohr’s world. With doom spiraling toward them, Brohr must lead an unlikely rebellion, unearth disturbing family secrets, and tame the raging ghost that haunts him. Can Brohr lead his people out of darkness, or will he succumb to his own terrifying bloodlust, and destroy the very people he has sworn to save?
The Skald’s Black Verse has Sinister creatures, a raging ghost, black magic and alien races with all the stabby-ness you love from the Grimdark genre. And for me, the cover epitomises these themes, I love it. And you only have to wait a few days (August 6th) to get your hands on such a gorgeous looking book and the start of The Dreadbound Ode series.
Goodreads isn’t everything but an average rating of 4.34 at the time of writing is a great indicator of the quality of this tale and I must say that cover will look gorgeous on any shelf.
